What is Naturopathic Medicine?
A holistic and preventative care approach to treating disease that uses nature and the body to heal itself
Six Principles of Naturopathic Medicine
-
First Do No Harm
-
Identify and Treat the Root Cause
-
Treat the Whole Person
-
The Healing Power of Nature
-
Doctor as Teacher
-
Prevention
These principles are implemented into each treatment plan, therefore, guiding the client to heal in the most natural and sustainable way. Each of these pieces are an integral part of exploring how capable the body is to heal and what tools are essential to assist in the process.
Modalities
Botanical Medicine
The use of plants as medicine dates back over 5,000 years ago in Ancient Egyptian and Chinese writings. Today, herbs and their plant parts have been extracted into several forms such as teas, capsules, tinctures and salves to help treat a multitude of conditions. They are generally recommended in blends as many herbs have synergistic effects with one another. When used correctly, herbs can be effective in treating acute and chronic diseases and may have fewer adverse reactions than pharmaceuticals.
Nutrition & Lifestyle
One of the most important elements of health and the basic foundation of natural medicine. With adequate vitamins and nutrients in the diet and through supplementation, healing can begin on a cellular level. With the right guidance and consistency, it is an essential part of preventing disease from occurring and can even manage chronic disease complications.
Homeopathy
Homeopathic remedies are based from plants, vitamins, minerals, and animal sources which are greatly diluted and can be taken in the form of a dissolvable pellet or water dosing. The principle idea behind this medicine is “like cures like”, meaning a substance that causes symptoms in high doses will cure those same symptoms in a diluted form. Remedies are chosen based off physical and mental symptoms, as well as the person’s constitution.
Hydrotherapy
The application of water to the body in alternating hot and cold cycles can stimulate the increase of oxygen and nutrient availability throughout the bloodstream to target tissues. This can improve the immune system to function better as well as aid in detoxification through the skin, kidneys, liver, and bowels. Treatments can be learned at home on a basic level.
Mind-Body
A critical part of the healing process is how the mind reacts to the body’s state of health or illness. Through exploration, we can better understand how your emotions and self-talk can influence your health. With the incorporation of emotional and spiritual techniques such as mindfulness and focused breathing, one can improve their stress response to life situations and thus overall health.

MEET DR. NOELLE SMOLCIC, ND
Dr. Smolcic was born and raised in Troy, Alabama. She attended the University of South Alabama in Mobile and graduated with a bachelor of science in Biomedical Sciences in 2017. Throughout her pre-med studies and work in the ER, she realized conventional medicine did not treat the root cause of disease and that treating symptoms alone was only part of the picture.
That’s when she discovered Naturopathic Medicine, a holistic and preventative approach to treating acute and chronic diseases with modalities such as botanical medicine, diet, and lifestyle to optimize the body’s innate healing power. It just made sense. She then graduated from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona, a nationally accredited Naturopathic school, in 2022. During her time in medical school and seeing patients in the clinic, she learned to be a compassionate and empathetic listener who took the time to get to know patients and their lifestyles in order to give them individualized and realistic treatment plans. It’s truly amazing how small changes can largely affect someone’s overall health and wellness.
Dr. Smolcic moved to New Orleans, Louisiana after graduation but continues to hold an active medical license in the state of Arizona. She is currently acting as a natural health consultant seeing clients in person and through telehealth.
My School
I received my doctorate from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, now called Sonoran University of Health Sciences. It is one of 8 nationally accredited schools for Naturopathic Medicine in North America. It has a 4-year curriculum, similar to a conventional medical school format with basic sciences for the first two years and clinical work for the last two years. After graduation, I took and passed my licensing exam and currently hold an active medical license in the state of Arizona.
